MARCH: GRADE A FOR WRENN

The first inter-school futsal tournament took place at Wrenn Astro in early March, and from this first look at the South American adaption of five-a-side football it will hopefully be here to stay.

In whether condition more appropriate to that of antartica rather than the beaches of Rio where it is believed the game generated from, Football Development Schools were proud to introduce the game of Futsal to four willing teams for this inaugural tournament and following a high standard of play over two weeks saw Wrenn A steal the honours. Over the following paragraphs we will take you through what made this tournament a success and hopefully tempt many more teams to this great game in the future.

Week One
On the coldest day of the year four teams would be vying for the first inter-school futsal trophy. Wrenn the host school had two teams to call on while Higham brought one team, with Football Development Schools bringing together a representative side together.

The first matches provided the players with an altogether new football experience learning what the ball would and would not do and trying to work out the best tactics in being successful at the game. With the cold weather, this task was made all the more difficult with the year 7's having to concentrate as much with the elements as much as the new game.

Within the hour of play there was a clear development within the play of the four teams with plenty of goals being scored and exciting play being produced inabundance. By the end of match day one it was clear that two teams would dominate, while the other two sides would need to progress considerably from weeks one performance.

Week Two
This considerable progress was shown within the first games of the second week, and along with the buds of brilliance being shown by individual players, the four teams had become tactically more actuate with Higham showing particular development within their rearguard action. Scoring would prove their biggest problem.

Wrenn B would save their best performance's of the campaign for their A side providing early scares before the strength of the eventual winners would be just two great.

The final would prove a fitting match up between the two pace setters within the quartet. Wrenn A while fragile at the back would always believe that they could out score their opponents while Football Development Schools had been consistent, out manoeuvring their opponents through effective performances while never rattling up considerable score lines.

Having battled through a remarkable 4-4 draw in the first set of matches, the final would be a one sided affair with Football Development Schools providing an early scare before Wrenn A's onslaught provided them with the first Futsal trophy in a 6-2 victory. The trophy was presented by former Northampton Town Player of the Year and current Brentford midfielder Chris Hargreaves to the delight of everybody present and capped off a wonderful first tournament.

Football Development Schools would like to thank all those who took part, including the match officials and look forward to welcoming back the current champions as well as a number of new schools vying for their crown.
