NOVEMBER: FUTSAL TOURNAMENT - THE SECOND DAY

The game of futsal continued its introduction to primary and junior school children across Northamptonshire with the second tournament day taking place at the KLV Arena, Kettering. The second tournament played host to five teams which made life easy for the tournament organisers, and gave each competing team more match time. As the afternoon unfolded it was clear that while the numbers were less than the 12 teams that took part on Tournament day 1 the excitement would last through to the final game. The Tournament was played in a league format with each team playing everybody else twice.

The 1st Round of Games
Eventual front Runners Rothwell Juniors and Rockingham Primary B would start the tournament in fine form picking up impressive wins to take early control of proceedings. Hawthorn Primary and Denfield Park Juniors would have to learn early lessons about what they would have to aspire to in being competitive within the tournament, and to their credit Denfield soon made amends to their first game defeat putting in a hard thought performance to edge out Rockingham A. Rothwell and Rockingham B then produced an end to end encounter with both goalkeepers in fine form, however a goal for Rockingham B half way through would divide the teams. Hawthorns young team then produced a really good team show to see off Rockingham A to record their first win. An excellent piece of individual skill creating the goal to separate the teams. Rockingham A would exact revenge in their next game between the sides. The final 1st round group games saw the two Rockingham sides produce a very entertaining encounter, with both teams taking a share of the points.

Group Standings - Half Way
1: Rockingham B 10pts
2: Rothwell 9pts
3: Denfield Park 6pts
4: Hawthorn 3pts
5: Rockingham A 1pt

The 2nd Round of Games
The games in the 2nd round would be closer affairs, with all the teams showing a greater understanding of how to become more effective within the game of futsal. Hawthorn would find the going tougher as their youngsters found the strength of the older players to much to handle and without ever having a lead to hold onto their skill and effort would not be rewarded. Denfield can be proud of their efforts, giving every team a hard game but would fall just short losing by a single goal to eventual leaders Rockingham B and Rothwell. Rockingham A were the main movers in the second part of the championship race only going down to Rothwell while avenging their earlier defeat by Hawthorn and beating Denfield in an even encounter. Rothwell and Rockingham B's second game produced fewer chances as they played out a goalless draw with both teams realising the importance of defence. This draw though gave the Corby side the advantage of having the tournament in their hands with two to play. They first made short work of Hawthorn leaving them with a deciding match vrs Rockingham A. Rothwell would beat Rockingham A in their final game leaving Rockingham B the opportunity to win if they could beat the schools A team.

Even with the significance of the game, tournament organisers gave Adam Brigeford the opportunity to ref the crucial game. Would he be able to cope with the pressure even as a work experience boy. Adam realised his opportunity leaving the others to make the tea and duly performed as he saw out an epic encounter with Rockingham B creating many chances. Rockingham A however were not reading the script making desperate tackle after desperate tackle to deny their comrades. It would be a quiet playground on Wednesday!! With Adams final whistle the scoreboard read Rockingham A 0 Rockingham B 0. Rothwell would take the trophy and are now in the Futsal Grand Final vrs Havelock Juniors. Following the two sides draw in a school match in October the Grand Final will be a close one to call.
