3RD ANNUAL FUTSAL TOURNAMENT REVIEW

NEWS - MARCH: YEAR 3&4 FUTSAL REVIEW

The 3rd annual year 3&4 futsal tournament, again produced some excellent play from all teams with the difference between the more successful and less successful teams greatly reduced from previous tournaments.

With nine teams entered, the 1st round would see a group of five play and a group of 4 to determine where teams would play in the more competitive 2nd round groups.

Group A was the five team side of the draw and would be a closely contested group with four teams pushing hard for the top two places.

Havelock's A team would scrape through as group winners following a last minute victory against Redwell B. They did not have everything their own way with a 1-0 defeat against Broughton, meaning they only finished first on goal difference. Broughton's shock first game defeat against Redwell B proved to be their undoing and the 3 nil reverse meant they paid the price in deciding the group winners. 3 Victories by 1 goal meant they progressed into the stronger half of the draw for the 2nd round. Redwell B and Park A produced some good performances and they picked up 6 points apiece, sadly inconsistency proved to be their biggest hurdle and they would have to make do with finishing level in terms of points and goal difference. Havelock C produced some very good performances, and had chances against all the teams they played. The goalkepper inparticular was very impressive and came in for much praise by the referees and spectators for his attitude and skill in his position.

Group B was abit more straight forward. Redwell A taking a 100% record into the 2nd group stage. There was a closer contest for 2nd place as Havelock B and Henry Gotch finished on the same points. Playing each other in the last game could not seperate the teams as a 0-0 draw meant Havelock B would scrape through with 2 more goals than their rivals. Park B left themselves to open in defence to provide any real match for their more experienced competitors, however they would be a more difficult opponent in the second group stage.

The second group stage saw teams play in groups dependant on where they finished in the the group stage. Teams finishing 3rd, 4th and 5th played in Group B and all matches were closely contested. Havelock C, while finishing in 5th place were far more competitive and teams had to work hard to break them down. Park B would also tighten up their goals against column and recorded a victory to take away with them. Redwell B recorded two early victories in the group, but their form could not be sustained, but they had recorded points in both stages of the competition. Henry Gotch and Park A were the standout sides of this group and a 3-2 victory for the Wellingborough outfit in their match up meant their 100% record would see them be group winners. Henry Gotch took second place deservidly and produced some very impressive performances throughout the afternoon.

Group A was extremely tight and 3 teams challenged hard to be crowned winners of the tournament. Havelock B were inconsistent. A closely thought game with their A team was followed by them being soundly beaten by Redwell A, before seeing them recover in fantastic style to record a deserved 2-2 draw against Broughton. This shock result put pay to Broughtons claim for honours as the result meant they would finish on 4 points having beaten Redwell A in the first game. Redwell A would live to regret the aberation of the first game leaving them to much to do against Havelock A. Redwell had to win to take the title on goal difference while Havelock only needed a draw having won the previous two games by two 2-1 scorelines. Redwell A seemed to be heading toward glory when they took an early lead however Havelocks never say die attitude meant a late equaliser would mean the silverwear was heading back to Desborough.

FDS would like to say a big thank you to all the schools who took part. The events continue to create an enthusiasm in the children which is a joy to see. We hope the schools wil work with us to make the school league a reality in the Autumn term. If schools would like information on FDS and Futsal please do not hesitate to contact us.
