JANUARY: EASTER TOUR TRIALS DAY

Football Development Schools welcomed 59 hopeful Easter tourists to Grendon Hall on a cold Grendon morning to see who should be selected to represent the Development Centre's in Holland. As with all FDS occassions the football would only be part of the overall experience with coaches Howard Willmott, Angus Meichan & Brian Page looking to see what each individual would be bring to the tour. While success on the field in Holland would be a bonus, getting the right mix of players together who can create an excellent learning occassion is the main aim of the tour and the trials would further educate the coaches on the different aspects of each player.

Trial details: 28 players took part, divided into 4 teams. The teams organised themselves and did their own warm ups and cool downs. Games were 7-a-side as will be the case in Holland at Easter. Team captains Tyler Richards, Josh Poulson, Mark Jackson and Luke Brown lead their teams superbly. Coach Angus Meichan was very pleased with the overall quality of the players competing for places and is delighted with the final squad selection. “All the players are skilful, attack minded players who have good game understanding. They each showed the right sort of attitude and level of application necessary to succeed at this level. I’m very optimistic that they will work well together as a squad on tour and produce some fine performances”. There were several “near misses” who will undoubtedly be disappointed at missing out on this tour. However further tours are planned for later this year.

For the boys of the U13 age group to shine, they had to show in a number of areas. The most important thing being 'can you be competitive over a two day tournament'. This age group have been lucky to be invited into the elite section of the tournament where the boys will pit their wits against teams of the calibre of Nottingham Forrest and Bromby (Denmark) along with a host of professional clubs from Holland. Those selected will have to ensure they start preparing themselves professionally from now through to the tour as they will be challenged considerably over the two days of competition.

Coach Howard Willmott was sufficiently impressed with all the boys attitudes "The test for the boys going on the tour will be immense, so we have to ensure that we are taking the boys who will compete the best and be mentally tough in a testing situation. The standard of the boys we have at the trial is excellent and it shows in the way they conduct themselves on and off the pitch the pride and responsibility they take in giving themselves the best chance possible for selection."

Football Development Schools would like to thank all the boys for their efforts, they were a credit to themselves and FDS. We would also the players parents for showing excellent support to the boys, they can only go as far as the parents will allow. Finally FDS would like to say a massive thank you to Grendon Hall who always try an accommodate us in all our ventures the staff often go beyond the call of duty which makes us feel very welcome.
