Football Development Schools Safeguarding Procedures
All FDS coaching staff must be aware of the relevant procedures outlined in Child Protection Workshops regarding suspected abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, exposure to domestic violence, bullying, self harm), and the appropriate channels for reporting suspected abuse.
Key Safeguarding Values:
- Place the well-being and learning of pupils at the centre of the sessions
- Have high expectations of all children regardless of background or personal circumstances
- Treat individuals with fairness and respect, valuing diversity and individuality
- Be a good role model demonstrating the qualities that you are preaching i.e. enthusiasm, respect, honesty, fairness, tolerance, patience and care
- Encourage reflective learning through briefing and debriefing
Agree with the individual school where the pupils will be getting changed and where they are required to meet you. This varies greatly from school to school. As soon as a child registers with you they become your responsibility, whether they are taking part in the session, going for a drink or going to the toilet.
DURING THE SESSION
Demonstrate key safeguarding values. Ensure session is run with safety as a primary concern (see F.A coaching course training handbook).
Structure these into the session to ensure children are able to go in groups, and therefore cause minimum disruption to the session, and ensure no child is going to the toilet without an adult present.
These are to be incorporated at regular intervals to enable rehydration and allow the group to have a drink break as a whole to enable the group to be easily managed.
At the end of the session children need to be reminded of what they have done during the session, reminded to remember all equipment and deregistered, as they are collected. Any children who are not collected on time need to be taken into school, where an appropriate member of staff is to be informed. If you are the adult in charge, you are to maintain the welfare of the child in accordance with best practice as outlined in Child Protection training (for details and further information please refer to FA Coaching Course handbook).
Football Development Schools Medical Procedures
During coaching sessions there are a number of things that your FA Emergency Aid course will have prepared you for. Detailed below are the medical procedures, which need to be followed in the case of a suspected injury.
Contact or Non Contact Injury – SALTAPS
S: STOP play/SEE incident. If the player has gone down injured get there as quickly as you can.
A: ASK the player (unless unconscious, if the injury is serious ensure that you follow the emergency first aid procedures) what happened. Remember, as detailed a history as possible will be important. Be aware of facial expression, posture adopted etc as this may indicate the degree of pain (and hence the severity of injury). Is the player talking sensibly?
L: LOOK at the specific limb. Be vigilant for obvious signs e.g. bleeding, discolouration / bruising, immediate swelling, bone / joint deformity, muscle spasm.
T: TOUCH the injury site only if the athlete will let you. (Again this can indicate just how serious the injury may be.) Palpate gently to find the site of pain note the athletes response. Do not be sadistic in your handling.
A: ACTIVE movement: can the athlete move the limb painlessly through the full range of movement?
P: PASSIVE movement: Only if ACTIVE above applies attempt to move the joint to the end of its range and note the response.
S: STRENGTH testing – If the player is not going to continue the game or training, there is no need for strength testing. If the signs are good, the coach resists the action of muscles working over the injured part. All movements available are tested and, again the coach checks for pain or discomfort through facial expression and questioning.
If the player passes through the first seven areas covered by SALTAPS assessment, they are then helped into a standing position for applicable weight bearing functional tests. For a minor ankle injury, for example, he could progress through these steps:
• Assisted Standing & standing unaided
• Walking forward unaided
• Jogging on the spot, forward (straight line) & backwards
• Quarter pace running, half paced running, three-quarter paced running
• Stopping and starting & full-pace sprinting
• Side-to-side running (zigzag, figure of eight)
The latter test is important to stress the ankle/knee ligaments.
Ensure that the incident is recorded in the incident sheet provided and also ensure that the school and parent are informed of the incident.
Emergency first aid
If there has been an accident and someone is injured and you suspect it may be serious enough to render him or her unconscious.
Check your surroundings
Only when you’re sure it’s safe should you take action and commence first aid.
Turn your attention to the accident victim. Before anything else it’s vital you find out if they are conscious:
- Speaking loudly and clearly, ask the casualty if they can hear you, and to explain what has happened;
- If they don’t answer, ask them to open their eyes. This helps identify those people who are alert but may be unable to talk;
- If there is no response, very gently shake the person’s shoulders, and look carefully for any signs of life;
- If the patient is unconscious, ensure that you or a nearby teacher or parent calls 999 for an ambulance.
While you wait for help to arrive, it’s up to you to keep the person alive. It’s now time to check the golden ‘ABC’ of first aid – ‘Airway’, ‘Breathing’ and ‘Circulation’.
‘A’ is for Airway
A blocked airway can quickly lead to suffocation, and possibly death. After any accident there could be a foreign object in their mouth, or the victim may swallow their tongue. Check inside their mouth, and remove anything that shouldn’t be there. Place one hand on their forehead, and gently tilt the head back, whilst lifting the chin up with the tips of two fingers on your other hand – this reduces the risk of them swallowing their tongue.
‘B’ is for Breathing
Even with an open airway, the victim may have stopped breathing. Check for breathing by placing your head over the victim’s face so your cheek hovers above their mouth and your eyes look down at their chest – is it moving up and down taking breaths? Feel for any breaths against your cheeks, and listen for any breath sounds.
What you do next depends on whether they’re breathing or not.
If the victim is not breathing, you need to give them two rescue breaths:
- Pinch the person’s nose, take a deep breath and seal your lips around their mouth. Blow into their mouth, and look to make sure their chest rises and falls;
- Now check their pulse. If there is no pulse, you should commence CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). If they have a pulse, give regular rescue breaths, one every five seconds, checking the pulse every minute.
If the victim is breathing, as long as you feel there are no other serious injuries (particularly to the head or neck), you should place them in the recovery position:
- Roll the victim onto their side.
- Lift their chin forward to maintain an open airway, then place their hand underneath their cheek.
In this position they should not be able to roll forwards or backwards. Keep an eye on their breathing and pulse until help arrives.
‘C’ is for Circulation
A qualified first aider only should perform CPR. The aim is to breathe for the victim, whilst pumping blood around their body to keep them alive. CPR and rescue breathing techniques are performed differently in adults, infants and children, and guidelines change frequently. In an adult:
- Place the heel of one hand in the centre of the chest. Position your other hand on top, and lock the fingers of both hands.
- Keeping your arms straight, press down about 5cm. This is one chest compression.
- You should perform 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100 a minute, trying to pump blood around the body.
- Following this, give two rescue breaths. This cycle of 30 compressions and two breaths should be repeated until help arrives.
Ensure that the incident is recorded in the incident sheet provided and also ensure that the school and parent are informed of the incident.
Football Development Schools Child Protection Policy
1. Football Development Schools acknowledges its responsibility to safeguard the welfare of every child and young person who has been entrusted to its care and is committed to working to provide a safe environment for all members. A child or young person is anyone under the age of 18 engaged in any club football activity. We subscribe to
The Football Association’s child protection and best practice policy and procedures and endorse and adopt the policy statement contained in that document.
2 The key principles of The FA child protection policy are that:
• The child’s welfare is, and must always be, the paramount consideration
• All children and young people have a right to be protected from abuse regardless of their age, gender, disability, culture, language, racial origin, religious beliefs or sexual orientation
• All suspicions and allegations of abuse will be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately
• Working in partnership with other organisations, children and young people and their parents or carers is essential.
We acknowledge that every child or young person who plays or participates in football should be able to take part in an enjoyable and safe environment and be protected from poor practice and abuse. Football Development Schools recognises that this is the responsibility of every coach involved in our organisation.
3 Football Development Schools has a role to play in safeguarding the welfare of all children and young people by protecting them from physical, sexual or emotional harm and from neglect or bullying. It is noted and accepted that The Football Association’s child protection regulation (see The FA Handbook) applies to everyone in football whether in a paid or voluntary capacity. This includes those who are a volunteer, match official helper on club tours, football coach, and club official or medical staff.
4 We endorse and adopt The FA’s child protection and best practice guidelines for recruiting coaches and will:
• Develop a role profile
• Request identification documents
• As a minimum meet and chat with the applicant(s) and where possible conduct interviews before appointing
• Request and follow up with two references before appointing
• Require a Football Development Schools Enhanced CRB disclosure where appropriate in line with FA guidelines.
All current Football Development Schools coaches and assistants with direct access to children and young people will be required to complete a CRB Enhanced Disclosure via The Football Development Schools in house CRB process.
If there are concerns regarding the appropriateness of an individual who is already involved or who has approached us to become part of Football Development Schools, guidance will be sought from The Football Association. It is noted and accepted that Football Development Schools will consider the relevance and significance of the information obtained via the Football Development Schools Enhanced CRB Disclosure and that all decisions will be made in the best interests of children and young people.
It is accepted that The FA aims to prevent people with a history of relevant and significant offending from having contact with children or young people and the opportunity to influence policies or practice with children or young people. This is to prevent direct sexual or physical harm to children and to minimize the risk of ‘grooming’ within football.
5 Football Development Schools supports The FA’s whistle blowing policy. Any adult or young person with concerns about a colleague can ‘whistle blow’ by contacting The FA Child Protection Manager on 0207 745 4771, by writing to The FA Case Manager at The Football Association, 25 Soho Square, London W1D 4FA or by going direct to the police, social services or the NSPCC. Football Development Schools encourages everyone to know about it and utilise it if necessary.
6 Football Development Schools has appointed a Child Welfare Officer (CWO) in line with The FA’s role profile and required completion of the child protection and best practice workshop. The post holder will be involved with designated person’s training provided by The FA. The CWO is the first point of contact for all club members and parents or guardians regarding concerns for the welfare of any child or young person. They will liaise directly with the CFA CPO and will be familiar with the procedures for referring any concerns. They will also play a proactive role in increasing an awareness of poor practice and abuse amongst club members.
7 We acknowledge and endorse The FA’s identification of bullying as a category of abuse. Bullying of any kind is not acceptable at our club. If bullying does occur, all players, parents or guardians should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly. Incidents need to be reported to the CWO, a member of the committee or, in cases of serious bullying contact the CFA CPO.
8 Codes of conduct for players, parents or spectators, officials and coaches have been implemented by Football Development Schools. In order to validate these codes of conduct the club has clear sanctions to deal with any misconduct at club level and acknowledges the possibility of potential sanctions, which may be implemented by leagues or the CFA in more serious circumstances. All prospective members will be informed of these codes.

Delivery Policy – Football Development Schools will always try to get all orders to customers at the session following the order. However, this may not always be possible, for reasons such as:
Products on Pre-Order or out of stock
Products that are not in stock at the time of ordering will be delivered at the next session after they have arrived with Football Development Schools
If a product is in extremely high demand we may need to re-order it from our suppliers. If there is any problem fulfilling your order we will contact you immediately.
Returns Policy – If a garment is the wrong size, we will exchange it providing all tags remain intact and the garment is in appropriate ‘unworn’ condition. If a garment is deemed to be deficient in quality, we will replace this item with an exact replacement. Please be advised of the washing guidelines for all garments. In the event that the washing guidelines have not been followed, a replacement will be refused.
Refund Policy – At Football Development Schools we want you to be delighted with every purchase you make. However, it is important that you retain your receipt. If you change your mind and wish to cancel a place on a course that has yet to start, simply call F.D.S 01858 461166 within 7 days of purchase and we will refund you in full via the original payment method used (Football Development Schools charge £5 per cancellation). Please ensure that you retain your activation card, as this will be required in order to process your refund.
Cancellation Policy – Football Development Schools reserves the right to cancel courses up to 48 hours prior to the commencement of a new course. Football Development Schools also reserves the right to cancel an on-going course at up to 48 hours’ notice, prior to the following session. Where possible an alternative course will be offered. All cancellations, in the event of an alternative not being available, will result in a refund in full within 30 days.
Terms and Conditions
FDS cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage to any personal belongings whilst attending an FDS event. Please ensure that no valuables are taken to the venue by your children.
Health & Safety
A full risk assessment will be carried out before any activity takes place at a new venue. FDS coaches hold a current emergency aid certificate issued by an appropriate body. It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to ensure appropriate clothing is worn and/or available for their child for the activity provided and weather conditions.
Any medical conditions that participant may have must be fully disclosed (1) at the time of booking in writing to FDS at registration and (2) to the lead coach on the camp or at the venue.
FDS only accepts liability for personal injury or death of any participant attending an FDS activity directly caused by its negligence or negligence of its staff.
Programme and Coaching Session Changes
In the event that FDS has to cancel an event or a session under our controol, a full refund will be issued to the person who booked, no written request is required.
In the event of circumstances beyond our control, for example school and venue closures, a refund will not be issued.
Payments are made monthly. We take payment automatically on the 1st of every month.
If any players need to leave the development centre for any reason, we would require 1 calendar months notice in order to cancel future payments and the cut
off date is 10th of the month.
Tours and Trips
Each tour and trip carries it’s own terms and conditions based on the individual organisation of said trip/tour. Please refer to individual invitation letters for this information.
Do FDS accept child care vouchers?
Unfortunately we are not a registered child care facility so cannot accept child care vouchers of any type.
Can I pay on the day?
Payment on the day is accepted in certain circumstances, however, we recommend that you pay prior to the event as we cannot guarantee your child’s place if maximum numbers have already been achieved.
